Wuhan University of Science and Technology is a local high-level university jointly established by the province and the ministry. It is a university selected by the national "Middle and Western University Basic Ability Construction Project" and a "Double First Class" key construction university in Hubei Province. The history of running the school can be traced back to the Technology School established by the Governor of Huguang in the late Qing Dynasty, Zhang Zhidong, who requested the Qing government to approve the establishment. The inheritance and development of Wuchang Iron and Steel Industry School was established as Wuhan Iron and Steel Institute in 1958 to provide undergraduate education. In 1995, Wuhan University of Iron and Steel, Wuhan College of Architecture, Wuhan College of Metallurgy and Medicine under the former Ministry of Metallurgy merged to form Wuhan University of Metallurgical Science and Technology. In 1998, in accordance with the needs of the reform of the national higher education management system, it became the first batch of transfer colleges to implement "co-construction between the central and local governments, mainly managed by the Hubei Provincial People's Government". In 1999, it was renamed Wuhan University of Science and Technology.
