Herzegovina, and especially the city of Mostar, have always occupied a significant place on the Bosnian scientific scene. Nevertheless, the modern process of higher education in Mostar began in 1950 with the opening of the Higher Pedagogical School, then the Higher Technical School, the Mechanical Profession in 1959 and the Higher Agricultural School in 1960. Departments of the Faculty of Law and Economics of the University of Sarajevo were formed in 1970, and in 1976 they grew into independent faculties.
Recognizing the need and fulfillment of all preconditions, members of the Municipal Assembly of Mostar at the session held on 24.02. In 1975, they passed a Conclusion on the organization of preparatory activities for the establishment of the University of Mostar. Based on the mentioned Conclusion, the Assembly was held on May 16, 1975. passed the Decision on the formation of the initiative committee for the establishment of the University of Mostar.
