With the relocation of Tokyo University of Education, the University of Tsukuba was the first in Japan to carry out a drastic university reform in order to respond to various requests from inside and outside the university while making the best use of its good tradition and characteristics. In October 1948, it was established as a comprehensive university featuring "open university," "new mechanism for education and research," and "new university autonomy." While playing a leading role in university reform, the university is promoting the creation of a vibrant and internationally competitive university, such as the sophistication of education and research, the individualization of the university, and the revitalization of university management.
