About Us

In Mostar and Herzegovina, the beginning and development of higher education and school institutions dates back to the end of the 19th century. The roots of higher education in Mostar are linked to the founding of the Franciscan Theological Seminary, which began operating in 1895. It was the first university-level school. Immediately after the Second World War (1950), the Higher Pedagogical School began operating in Mostar. This is followed by the Higher Technical School (1959), the Higher School of Agriculture (1960) and the departments of the Faculty of Law and Economics, which since 1976 have grown into independent faculties. From 1977 until 1992, both higher schools and faculties operated within the Džemal Bijedi? University in Mostar, and the official language was Croatian-Serbian. Since 1992, the name and official language of the University has changed.

During the Homeland War on April 7, 1992, the teaching process was interrupted because the first grenades fell on the Student Dormitory and the Faculty of Economics. The university did not operate only in the period from April to July 1992 due to the constant aggressor shelling of Mostar. Summer exam deadlines were held in Široki Brijeg for students who did not live in Mostar. The next two academic years (1992/93 and 1993/94) classes for the first year of study were organized in Neum and Široki Brijeg. Since the academic year 1994/95 classes are held in partially renovated university buildings in Mostar.
