About Us

The 'Old University' - as we call the Leuven University from its foundation until 1797 - initially had four faculties: Artes , Canon Law, Civil Law and Medicine. In 1432, the Faculty of Theology was added with papal permission.

When the university was founded, it was housed in what is today the University Hall. The imposing building was inaugurated in 1317 as an urban cloth hall. By the end of the 17 ecentury, the entire hall has been donated to the university. Since its university use, the venerable building has been converted into the university's administrative seat, housing the offices of the rector and vice-rectors and of the university's services. For centuries, the University Hall also contained lecture halls and meeting rooms for the old faculties. The university court also sat there. Along with the many tax exemptions that the university community and enjoyed the privilege of its graduates in a number appoint ecclesiastical offices, all illustrating the high degree of autonomy that the university until the 18 e managed to retain century. Incidentally, this independence was often a thorn in the side of the secular and ecclesiastical authorities.
