One of the starting points of higher agricultural education in China. The predecessor of the school was the Hubei Agricultural School founded in 1898 by Zhang Zhidong, governor of Huguang during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. After several changes, in 1952, all the departments of Wuhan University's Agricultural College and Hubei Agricultural College, as well as some departments of the agricultural colleges of six comprehensive universities including Sun Yat-sen University, were formed to establish Huazhong Agricultural College. In 1979, it was approved as a national key university by the State Council, directly under the Ministry of Agriculture. In 1985, it was renamed Huazhong Agricultural University. In 2000, the Ministry of Agriculture was transferred to the direct leadership of the Ministry of Education. In 2005, it entered the ranks of the national "211 Project" construction. In 2017, it was included in the national "double first-class" construction ranks.
