The Visionary of the University, His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, who until August 2012, was the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos and has since been succeeded by Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins nursed the idea of establishing a University. It is worthy of note that the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has since 1973 promoted educational development in its territory. This led to the establishment of many primary and secondary schools. In a bid to foster qualitative higher education, the Archdiocese established St. Augustine's College of Education, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos; the first privately-owned college of education in Nigeria. In furtherance to this, a decision was taken to establish Augustine University. A decision informed by the belief of the Proprietor that higher education plays a crucial role in our modern world since it is a key source of ideas and innovation. It is equally in recognition of this fact and the need to expand access to higher education in the country that the Federal Government of Nigeria granted permission to corporate bodies and organizations to establish private Universities provided these meet the required criteria.
